Food discounts from your local library!?!
Food discounts from your local library!?!
Yes, you read that right! You can get discounts on food with your library card! Read on and I’ll tell you how!
I recently overheard my lifelong friend telling her daughter that I used to work in a library and still go to the library. I did and I do!
Libraries aren’t just about books! You may be able to get food discounts from your local library, too!
However, the library of today is not the library of yesteryear … It’s SO MUCH BETTER! There are so many more perks than just checking out a book or video or finding an old newspaper on microfiche (look that one up kids). Today’s libraries also serve as mini offices with private study rooms, computer access, copy machines, and some even have areas set up like coffee shops with vending machines and café style tables. Plus, there are all kinds of online opportunities to access digital books, movies, TV shows, music, and even classes and crafts!
I was REALLY surprised about another library perk I recently discovered related to FOOD…yes, food! Food discounts are available IF your library is in the GO Library card program.
This is how I found it … Shelby Township neighbors where I live and they opened a new library, which I wanted to check out. At the same time, I was trying to find the original Top Gun movie at my library to watch before Top Gun: Maverick. The copies at my library weren’t going to be available for quite a while due to demand. However, Shelby Township had a couple copies available. (I know I could have just streamed it, but this gave me a reason to USE the NEW library in town.)
So, I had to figure out how to check items out from that library. And in doing so, I discovered the food discount.
Through interlibrary loan systems in Michigan, library cardholders can access materials from participating libraries in other cities.
Here are some Interlibrary loan systems in Michigan allowing access to materials to cardholders from other libraries.
- Suburban Library Cooperative https://libcoop.net/slc/
- MeLCat https://mel.org/about
- MILibraryCard program https://www.milibrarycard.org/
The food discount comes from the GoLibraryCard Discount Program which is available to Suburban Library Cooperative card holders. There are also discounts for businesses other than food and even Premium discounts for concerts and other events.
Additionally, you may also want to check out Mi Library is Now program. (I don’t think any food is involved though.)
So, go ahead! See if you can discover food discounts from your local library. Check around on its web site to see if you can discover something it offers that you didn’t know about!
